How it works

Scent reaches the limbic system in under two seconds. Hinoki has been studied for its effect on heart rate, blood pressure and parasympathetic nervous activity when inhaled. Yuzu, the citrus in Pause, has been shown to lower stress markers and lift mood. Three tools that help promote all day calm.

Ingredients

Hinoki Oil

Hinoki Oil

100% pure Japanese hinoki in a 10ml bottle. A scent used in bathing rituals for centuries and traditionally associated with calm. We source directly from a single forest in Japan, so every bottle traces back to one place.

Pause

Pause

Hinoki and yuzu blended in jojoba oil. A 10ml rollerball for pulse points and the top of your hands. The yuzu lift is what makes Pause feel different from straight hinoki. Calm with energy.

Forest Block

Forest Block

Hand-finished wood, sanded smooth and engraved with やすらぎにねざす (rooted in calm). Add 1 to 3 drops of hinoki oil and the wood holds the scent for hours. The block develops its own scent over time.

How we turn sustainable hinoki wood scraps into your daily calm.

01. The Japanese forest

We went to the forests of Japan to source our hinoki oil directly and visit the rural towns it supports. We wanted to see where the wood comes from, meet the people behind it and understand the communities that are struggling. It was also a chance to spend time in the ancient forests that inspired the entire kimorii collection.

02. Scraps to chips

The hinoki wood used for oil is never taken from healthy, straight lumber grade trees. Those become building material. The pieces that are too small or irregular get turned into chips. Nothing is wasted. It keeps the forest managed and supports the local mills that rely on this process to stay alive.

03. Steam distilled

Those chips go into a steam distillation setup where heat pulls out the natural aroma compounds. That is where hinoki oil actually forms. The first time we saw it, the entire room smelled like a calming forest. Pure, simple and nothing added. Just the scent that Japanese researchers have studied for decades.

04. Calm in a bottle

After distillation, the oil is filtered, sent to us in the USA and filled into bottles by hand. That is how the forest turns into something you can use anywhere.

05. Sustainability

When trees are harvested for lumber, new ones are planted. The process supports rural communities that are shrinking and helps keep traditional forest management alive. When you use the kit, you support that cycle. Calm for you and a sustainable future for the people who maintain these forests.

Common questions

Everything before you buy

What's in it, how long does it last and is this good for nervous system regulation? All answered.

What's in the set?

Three things: a 10ml bottle of hinoki oil, a 10ml bottle of Pause (hinoki + Japanese yuzu), and a hand-finished cedarwood Forest Block. Hinoki is for deep calm. Pause is for nervous-system regulation with a little energy from the yuzu. The Forest Block is a passive diffuser: a few drops on the wood and the scent holds for hours without electricity, heat, or noise. Together, you've got a full toolkit for simple nervous system regulation.

When do I use Pause vs. hinoki?

Both work any time of day. Hinoki is the deeper, more grounded one. Reach for it when you want full, settled calm. Pause is hinoki with Japanese yuzu, which adds a brighter citrus note and a bit of energy behind the calm. It still regulates the nervous system, just with a little burst of energy.

You can build routines around both scents: hinoki for the wind-down and nervous system maintenance, Pause when you want to feel calm but feel like being more energized. It's also nice to alternate so you don't burn out on one scent.

Is the Forest Block made of hinoki?

Right now the block is made with cedarwood. Cedar holds the oils beautifully and develops its own patina over months of use. A hinoki wood version is in production and will be available soon.

How is the Forest Block different from a diffuser?

They do different jobs. A diffuser disperses scent across a room but the scent only lasts 20 to 30 minutes and uses more oil per session. The Forest Block is passive: a few drops on the wood and it holds the scent for several hours, slowly releasing close to the surface. You can hold it in your hand.

It doesn't reach across the room the way a diffuser does, but it lasts much longer per drop and works without electricity, noise, or a timer. Most people end up using both: the block daily for portability, on a nightstand or desk. The diffuser when they want the whole room to smell like a Japanese forest. Best when used in small spaces.

How long does the scent last on the Forest Block?

Up to a few hours per application of oil. Over time, as you keep using the same block, the wood absorbs the oil and develops its own unique scent. The longer you use it, the more layered and personal it gets. Refresh with a drop or two whenever the scent starts to fade.

Is this a good set for nervous system regulation?

Every piece that you see in the set is exactly what we have used for years. It's the most simple and effective way that we found to help control our own nervous systems. Everything was made to be portable and simple to use. Combine the products with breathwork to increase the effectiveness.

How long will the set last?

Depends on how you use it. Most people get 3 to 5 months of daily use out of the two oils combined. Direct inhalation from the bottle barely uses any oil and can stretch a bottle past a year. Block use (1 to 3 drops at a time) is the middle range. The Forest Block itself lasts indefinitely. The wood doesn't wear out, and the scent profile gets more complex over time as the oils cure into the grain.
