A tactile reminder that calm isn’t a luxury, it’s a performance tool. Carved with the Japanese hiragana やすらぎにねざす (yasuragi ni nezasu), which means “rooted in calm,” this block keeps your reminder front and center. Touch its smooth surface and add up to 3 drops of hinoki to the top.

How to Use
- Keep this piece on your desk, nightstand, or anywhere you need a visual reminder that calm is intentional.
- Run your fingers over the smooth wood and feel the subtle engraving of the word "calm," the hiragana やすらぎにねざす, and our logo.
- Set it down and add 1 to 3 drops of hinoki essential oil to the top surface.
- Pick it back up and bring it close to your nose.
- While you inhale, practice the 4-4-4-4 breathing method: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds.
- Repeat whenever you need another moment of calm.

How we make it
Cut + engraved
Each block starts as a flat piece of wood, cut to the block's silhouette. The laser then burns やすらぎにねざす (rooted in calm) into the face while the surface is still flat and clean. Doing the engraving early means the phrase sits deep in the grain before anything else touches it. Same phrase on every block. Slightly different on every block, because no two pieces of wood take the burn the same way.
Routed + carved
The edges go through a router that softens every corner into a smooth curve, then the well on top is carved by hand. Deep enough to hold enough hinoki oil, shallow enough that the wood around it does most of the work. This is where the block stops being a flat cutout and starts being something you want to pick up. No sharp lines, nothing that catches.
Hand sanded
The whole block gets sanded down through multiple grits, rough to fine, until the surface feels soft against your palm. The engraving stays crisp, the routed edges stay smooth, and the wood around the well opens up so the oil can soak in. This is the slowest part of the process.

What is the Forest Block?
A small hand-finished wood block designed as a passive diffuser for hinoki oil. Add a few drops to the top surface and the scent releases slowly for hours. Carved with the Japanese hiragana やすらぎにねざす (yasuragi ni nezasu, "rooted in calm") and engraved with the word "calm" and our logo. It's both a daily tool and a tactile reminder.
How many drops should I use?
1 to 3 drops at a time. Less than you'd use in a diffuser. The wood absorbs the oil and releases it gradually, so you don't need a lot per application. Start with one drop, see how the scent fills your space, and add more if you want it stronger.
How long does the scent last?
Up to a few hours per application. The block holds the scent close to its surface and releases it slowly.
Over time, as you keep using the same block, the wood absorbs the oil and develops its own unique scent that lingers even without adding more. The longer you use it, the more layered and personal it gets.
What kind of wood is it?
Currently cedarwood, hand-finished in our workshop. Each block is laser cut, engraved with the hiragana and our logo, sanded smooth and carved with a shallow well on top for the oil. A hinoki wood version is coming soon.
Will it stain surfaces?
Not at normal drop sizes. The oil absorbs into the wood grain and won't transfer in measurable amounts. That said, the underside isn't sealed, so if you're worried about a delicate finished surface (white oak nightstand, polished marble), keep a small coaster or piece of felt underneath.
