Why I started

The small habits behind the best shape of my life.

I'm Anthony, founder of theo & amelia. I'm 41 and in the best shape of my life, and a lot of that comes down to learning how to regulate my nervous system instead of just pushing harder.

I learned that the hard way, when I burnt out, booked a one way flight to Japan with no plan, and ended up in a hinoki tub at an onsen two hours outside Tokyo. The scent of the wood did something I couldn't think my way into, and I've kept hinoki in my routine ever since.

None of it's complicated. It's a few small habits I've stacked together to help my body recover and sleep better, and most of them happen around practice.

  • 5 min
    Before yoga

Simple breathing with hinoki before I step on the mat, so I'm not carrying the whole day into practice.

  • 5 min
    After yoga

The same five minutes after practice, while my body is already starting to slow down.

  • During
    Sound baths and breathwork

A bottle close by, so I can smell it during a sound bath or a breathwork session.

From one of my events

No phones. Just the sound and scent of a hinoki forest.

For the past few months, I've been testing out boring get togethers at studios and wellness spaces. You can sit, lay down or even stretch. It might be uncomfortable at first since you're most likely used to constant stimulation, but your body eventually adjusts and switches modes.

For your studio

Your studio can be the first place they smell it.

Hinoki isn't very popular in the US (yet), so for most of your students this will be the first time they've ever smelled it. Scent association plays a big role in how we respond, and when that first time happens in your class, the scent starts to mean calm. When they ask where to get it, it's right at your front desk.

  1. In your classes

Five minutes before or after class, or during the whole class if it's needed. It depends on the type of class, and every studio and wellness space where I've held events uses it a little differently.

  2. At your front desk

Wholesale pricing for studios that want to offer it to their community, so people can bring the same scent home for their own practice.

  3. Straight from Japan

I go to Japan a couple of times a year and work directly with a forest and a distillery there, because most of the hinoki I found in the US was nothing like the real thing.

Sauna and contrast therapy

One scent from the sauna to the cold plunge.

Contrast therapy is a big part of my own routine, and hinoki fits into it the same way it fits into yoga. I smell it before I start, keep it close in the sauna, and come back to it after the cold, so the whole session ends on one familiar scent.

For a sauna or contrast therapy space, that means the scent your guests know from your rooms is the same one they can take home from your front desk.

  • Before
    Before the first round

A few breaths with hinoki before the heat to help shift modes.

  • In the sauna
    Through each round of heat

Hinoki close by in the sauna, so the scent is there every time you go back in.

  • After
    After the session

Five minutes of breathing with hinoki inside the warm tub or chill zone.
