Hinoki Oil

Feel calmer, regulate your nervous system and sleep deeper with pure hinoki oil.
Steam distilled from Japanese cypress trees that we source directly, our hinoki oil delivers the same calming compounds found in fresh forest air.

Hinoki trees naturally release compounds like alpha-pinene, which have been scientifically proven to lower stress and help with deeper sleep. It has been the single most important tool in our overall wellness routine, which is why we decided to source our own.

Use hinoki to help calm you down instantly throughout the day and for deeper rest at night:

  1. Smell directly from the bottle for immediate calm. Enhance the effect with 5 minutes of breathwork. Either the 4-4-4-4 method or 4-7-8.
  2. Diffuse 2–3 drops to fill your space with the calming compounds of hinoki.
  3. Use before bed, before meetings, or whenever you need to calm the mind.
  4. Optionally use 1-3 drops with our Forest Block throughout the day when you need to reset.

Hinoki oil's botanical name is Chamaecyparis obtusa (hinoki) and originates from Japan.

Better Sleep

I used to struggle with sleep and thought there had to be some magic fix. A supplement, a gadget, anything. But nothing worked. What finally clicked was realizing there’s no single hack that saves you. Sleep starts way before bedtime. It’s a system you build from the moment you wake up.

Once I paired that mindset with my habit stack and added hinoki oil into the routine, everything shifted. I fall asleep within minutes now and wake up feeling like my body actually recovered.

This is the system that helped me and I hope it helps you, too.

Less Stress

Smelling hinoki oil while doing breathwork is one of the simplest and most effective habit stacks for keeping your nervous system steady from morning to night. I recommend smelling hinoki or Pause every 2 hours for 5 minutes while doing the 4-4-4-4 breathing method. That’s it. It regulates your nervous system, which leads to higher productivity, less stress and deeper rest at night.

Shinrin-yoku

Forest Bathing

Forests calm you for a reason. The light, the sounds and the compounds in the air all tell your nervous system you're safe enough to activate parasympathetic mode. Hinoki contains those same natural compounds, which is why it instantly feels grounding. Pair it with soft lighting, natural sound and slow breathing and you can recreate the forest effect at home in minutes. Learn more about the health benefits of Japanese Shinrin-yoku (forest bathing) and how to create those feelings at home.

From forest to calm

How we turn sustainable hinoki wood scraps into your daily calm.
The Japanese forest

We went to the forests of Japan to source our hinoki oil directly and visit the rural towns it supports. We wanted to see where the wood comes from, meet the people behind it and understand the communities that are struggling. It was also a chance to spend time in the ancient forests that inspired this whole product.

Scraps to chips

The hinoki wood used for oil is never taken from healthy, straight lumber grade trees. Those become building material. The pieces that are too small or irregular get turned into chips. Nothing is wasted. It keeps the forest managed and supports the local mills that rely on this process to stay alive.

Steam distilled

Those chips go into a steam distillation setup where heat pulls out the natural aroma compounds. That is where hinoki oil actually forms. The first time we saw it, the entire room smelled like a calming forest. Pure, simple and nothing added. Just the scent that Japanese researchers have studied for decades.

Calm in a bottle

After distillation, the oil is filtered, sent to us in the USA and filled into bottles by hand. That is how the forest turns into something you can use anywhere. A few inhales and your body reacts the same way it would out there. Your breath slows. Your shoulders drop. Your nervous system gets the signal to relax.

Sustainability

When trees are harvested for lumber, new ones are planted. The process supports rural communities that are shrinking and helps keep traditional forest management alive. When you use hinoki, you support that cycle. Calm for you and a sustainable future for the people who maintain these forests.

Ancient Japanese Tradition Backed by Modern Science

Japan has practiced forest bathing for decades. Long before it had a name, people walked slowly through cypress forests to calm their minds and reset their bodies. It wasn’t a wellness trend. It was a way of staying balanced in a world that was already moving too fast.

Modern science eventually caught up. Researchers found that hinoki trees release alpha pinene, bornyl acetate and other natural compounds that lower stress hormones, slow your heart rate and activate the parasympathetic nervous system. These are the same calming signals your body reacts to when you step into a quiet forest.

Hinoki oil is simply a concentrated way to access that same effect. A few breaths give your nervous system the same message those trees have given people for centuries. Slow down. You’re safe. Breathe.
