Product Details

Hinoki is a Japanese cypress that's been used in sleep and bathing rituals for centuries. We found it by accident. A flight to Japan after hitting a wall, a hinoki tub at an onsen and a calm we wanted to experience more often. We came back, ordered every version we could find online, but most of it was garbage.

So we went back to Japan. Found one forest. Met the supplier. Visited the distillery and the replanting sites. Every bottle we ship comes from that one source, undiluted.

This is the oil that changed how we sleep, how we recover from training and how we move through modern living that always has us on the go.

Use it throughout the day to reset. Use it before bed to settle.

How to Use
  • Smell directly from the bottle while doing slow inhales. Avoid touching the bottle to your nose.
  • Add 1-3 drops to a Forest Block. The scent can last hours and the block will develop its own unique scent over time.
  • Add 2-4 drops in a diffuser. Scent will last up to 30 minutes.

How hinoki makes people feel

Different routines, different reasons for reaching for hinoki. Then there's the scent itself. A Japanese forest after a light rain with a whisper of smoke and a small touch of citrus.

One bottle. Multiple ways to use it.

Every routine uses the same compounds. The difference is when you inhale, what you pair it with and what your body needs from it in that moment.

Sleep Most popular

Sleep

Your nervous system responds to physical cues, not willpower. Hinoki is the one we reach for before bed.

  • 30 min before bed: 2 drops on a wood block, in a diffuser or smell directly from bottle.
  • 5 minutes of 4-7-8 breathing. Smell hinoki on your inhales.
Breathwork

Breathwork

Slow breath signals rest. Hinoki anchors it. The combo is simple and most people notice it quickly.

  • Use wood block or smell from bottle.
  • For alert calm, box breathe (4-4-4-4) for 5 minutes.
  • For a deeper reset, 4-7-8 breathing for 5 minutes.
Training

Training

We go hard at the gym, then we want to be in recovery mode the second we're done. Hinoki helps us get there.

  • A few inhales during your cool down stretching.
  • Bonus if you combine it with box breathing (4-4-4-4).
  • Load up on protein of course.
Contrast therapy

Contrast therapy

Cold wakes the system up. Heat and hinoki are how we come back down. The contrast is the whole point.

  • 3 minutes of cold exposure
  • Warm shower or sauna directly after. If in the sauna, smell hinoki from your wood block.
  • You can add hinoki to the water bowl in the sauna, but do not apply directly to the stove. Use sparingly. A drop or two in the water bowl is plenty.
Yoga + mobility

Yoga + mobility

A calm mind makes the body easier to move. Hinoki is how we set the tone before the first pose.

  • Two drops on a wood block beside your mat.
  • Breathe it in during your opening stillness and Shavasana.
  • Stay nasal through the flow.
Running

Running

Unlike weight training, we prefer a calm mind and consistent pace. Hinoki helps before and after the run.

  • 5 minutes of slow nasal inhales during your warm up.
  • Again during your cool-down walk.
  • Optional: contrast shower with hinoki after.

How to use hinoki oil

Keep a bottle in your gym bag, nightstand, carry-on or desk drawer. Forest calm goes where you go.

Direct Inhalation

Direct Inhalation

Smell directly from the bottle. Anywhere, anytime. Scent reaches the limbic system faster than any other sense, making this the quickest way to anchor a moment of calm.

Forest Block

Forest Block

Add 1-3 drops to your hinoki wood block and let the scent absorb into the grain. The wood holds the scent for hours and slowly releases it throughout the day. Over time your block develops its own unique character.

Diffuser

Diffuser

The traditional method. Add 2-3 drops to your diffuser for ambient calm in a smaller space. Simple and familiar, though note that the scent will last around 30 minutes and will use your oil faster than other methods.

The science

What makes hinoki
different

Hinoki is made up of natural compounds your body recognizes. When you breathe them in, they reach the part of your brain tied to mood and stress response. It's a scent your body settles into, not one you have to think about. Like standing in an ancient Japanese forest after rain.

α-Pinene 37%
Studied for its calming effects. It's also the compound you breathe in during a walk through a pine forest.
δ-Cadinene 16%
The compound behind hinoki's grounded, woody character. What makes it smell unmistakably like Japanese cypress.
α-Cadinol 11%
Studied for its relaxing properties. Found in cedar, cypress, and other trees traditionally used across Japan for wellness spaces and bathhouses.
Sesquiterpenes (other) 25%
The deeper notes that give hinoki its complexity. The scent that lingers long after the top notes fade.

How we turn sustainable hinoki wood scraps into your daily calm.

01. The Japanese forest

We went to the forests of Japan to source our hinoki oil directly and visit the rural towns it supports. We wanted to see where the wood comes from, meet the people behind it and understand the communities that are struggling. It was also a chance to spend time in the ancient forests that inspired the entire kimorii collection.

02. Scraps to chips

The hinoki wood used for oil is never taken from healthy, straight lumber grade trees. Those become building material. The pieces that are too small or irregular get turned into chips. Nothing is wasted. It keeps the forest managed and supports the local mills that rely on this process to stay alive.

03. Steam distilled

Those chips go into a steam distillation setup where heat pulls out the natural aroma compounds. That is where hinoki oil actually forms. The first time we saw it, the entire room smelled like a calming forest. Pure, simple and nothing added. Just the scent that Japanese researchers have studied for decades.

04. Calm in a bottle

After distillation, the oil is filtered, sent to us in the USA and filled into bottles by hand. That's how the forest turns into something you can use anywhere.

05. Sustainability

When trees are harvested for lumber, new ones are planted. The process supports rural communities that are shrinking and helps keep traditional forest management alive. When you use hinoki, you support that cycle. Calm for you and a sustainable future for the people who maintain these forests.

Common questions

All answered.

Everything customers ask before buying from sourcing, safety, storage, and what happens if it doesn't work for you.

How long does one bottle last?

It depends on how you use it. Direct inhalationthe can stretch one 10ml bottle past a year, because you're only using the scent from the opening, not the oil itself. On a wood block (1–3 drops per use), expect 2–3 months of daily use. The wood block will also develop its own unique scent that you can use without adding more oil. In a diffuser (2–3 drops), closer to 4–6 weeks of daily use.

Can I put it directly on my skin?

We don't recommend it. Our oil is 100% pure hinoki wood oil undiluted. Essential oils at this strength should be diluted in a carrier oil (jojoba, fractionated coconut, almond) before any skin contact, typically at 1–2%.

The best way to get the nervous-system effect is inhalation. That's where the research is. Skin application is optional and non-essential.

Is it safe around pets and children?

Hinoki is generally considered one of the gentler essential oils, but like all essential oils, it should be used with care around pets and small children. Keep the bottle out of reach. Avoid diffusing in small unventilated rooms where a pet can't leave. Cats in particular lack the liver enzymes to process many essential oils efficiently. We'd avoid diffusing continuously around them.

If you're unsure, direct inhalation (from the bottle or wood block, away from others) is the safest method.

Where does the hinoki come from?

Only one forest that we personally visit in Japan. Steam-distilled from old-growth Chamaecyparis obtusa, the Japanese cypress grown in monastery forests for centuries. GC-MS verified, so the α-pinene percentage on our website is the α-pinene in the bottle. No blending, no dilution, no marketplace middleman.

How should I store it?

In the amber bottle it ships in, out of direct sunlight. Room temperature is fine. Keep the cap tight because the volatile terpenes are what make it work, and you don't want them evaporating off the top. Stored properly, the oil stays potent for 2–3 years.

What's different about this vs. marketplace hinoki oil?

Most hinoki oil sold on Amazon and big marketplaces is cut with cheaper oils, synthetic fragrance compounds, or harvested from cultivation-grown trees where the terpene profile is flat. If you've tried hinoki and felt nothing, that's usually why.

kimorii is single-source old-growth wood oil, undiluted, third-party tested. You'll feel the difference in the first inhale. It's denser, more grounded, less sharp than the synthetic versions.

What if it doesn't work for me?

We offer a 30-day return window. If the scent isn't for you, or the effect isn't what you expected, email us within 30 days of delivery and we'll refund the bottle. No interrogation. We'd rather you have the oil you actually want than hold onto one you don't.
