How Scent Reaches Your Vagus Nerve (and Calms You Down)

The vagus nerve is the main line between your brain and your recovery mode. Breathing and humming reach it directly. Scent reaches the part of the brain that tells it what to do.

For a long time I thought I could think my way out of being stressed. I couldn't. What actually worked was giving my body a physical signal that it was safe to slow down. The vagus nerve is the reason that works, and once you know how to reach it, you can do it on purpose.

What is the vagus nerve?

It's the longest cranial nerve in your body. It starts at your brainstem and runs down through your throat and chest to your heart, lungs and gut. It's the main channel of the parasympathetic nervous system, the side that slows your heart rate, deepens your breathing, turns digestion back on and lets your body recover.

Your nervous system has two modes. Sympathetic is go mode. Parasympathetic is recovery mode. You need both. The problem is that modern life keeps most of us in go mode all day, so the vagus nerve rarely gets a clear signal to take over. That's when you get brain fog, low energy, a short fuse and not feeling like yourself. It starts to feel normal. It isn't.

How do you stimulate the vagus nerve naturally?

A few things reach it directly, and none of them cost anything.

A long exhale. Breathing out slower than you breathe in is the strongest tool you have. I do 4-4-4-4 box breathing during the day and sometimes 4-7-8 before bed. The exhale is the part doing the work.

Humming. The vagus nerve passes through your throat, and the vibration from a low hum is a well documented way to engage it. Sounds weird, works. Most people hum in the shower without thinking about it and step out a little calmer. I wrote more about that in humming tones your vagus nerve.

Cold water on your face. It triggers the diving reflex, which slows your heart rate fast. A cold plunge does the same thing harder.

Those are the direct routes. Scent is different. It doesn't touch the nerve. It reaches the part of your brain that decides what the nerve should do.

Why does scent work so fast?

Sight, sound and touch all get routed through the thalamus before your brain does anything with them. Smell doesn't. It goes straight to the limbic system, the part of your brain that handles emotion, memory and stress, and that's the same area that sets the tone for your autonomic nervous system, vagus nerve included.

That's why walking into a room that smells wrong changes how you feel before you know why. And it's why one slow breath of the right scent can tell your body it's safe to slow down faster than any thought can.

Which scent should you use?

Honestly, any scent you use only for this. The effect that lasts comes from repetition. Smell the same thing while you do the same breathing, every time, and your brain learns it as the cue. After a few weeks the scent alone starts the shift.

I use hinoki. It's Japanese cypress, Chamaecyparis obtusa, the wood Japan builds its bathhouses from, and Hinoki Oil contains alpha-pinene and linalool, two compounds that have been studied for their calming properties. It's full of the same compounds you breathe in during a forest walk in Japan, which is part of why forest bathing makes people feel good. It also smells like nothing else in my house, so my brain doesn't confuse it with anything. Don't use cheap oils off Amazon. Make sure it's genuine and not filled with other junk.

When I want calm with more energy behind it, I use Pause, which pairs hinoki with Japanese yuzu. Hinoki for winding down, Pause for a reset in the middle of a day that still has work in it.

The real forest does all of this better. Go when you can. The bottle is for the days you can't.

  1. Open the bottle

    Hinoki or Pause straight from the bottle, or a few drops on a Forest Block within reach. Never on skin.

  2. Three slow breaths, long exhale

    In through the nose for four, out through the mouth for at least six. Add a low hum on the exhale if you're somewhere you can.

  3. Add the forest
