Rooted in Ritual: How Scent Anchors Us While Traveling

I recently decided to take a one month break from Bangkok to explore other areas of Thailand. I wanted to change up the pace since I noticed myself constantly running at 120% for too many days in a row. More like 10 months in a row...

The familiar feel of burnout was creeping up so I booked a flight to Phuket to explore different areas. I decided to book with Airbnb this time because they were a little more remote than hotels and I wanted to see if I liked living in the residential areas since I was interested in moving somewhere else for a few months. 

Even when travel is inspiring, it can still be extremely stressful. Let's take my most recent experience as an example. Both rentals failed to mention that their mountain views were now obstructed by construction. Far from the relaxing experience I was expecting and needed. It was also a reminder that in general I prefer to book hotels because at least I know I'll have a more consistent experience and service. 

When experiences like this happen, it's frustrating and your nervous system kicks in. But, I've learned that no matter where I travel or how stressful a situation away from home may be, it's extremely important to bring grounding routines with you. I have many small routines that I mostly do every day, but the main ones that I have to stick to even when traveling are:

  1. Waking up and doing 5 minutes of breathing with my Wake blend. Setting the tone for the day is an absolute must. 
  2. Gym or bodyweight exercises - I typically pick a hotel that has a decent gym so I can stick to the same routine I have at home. If not, I find a local gym and get a week pass. Of course, my Charge blend comes with me. 
  3. Cafe time - one of my favorite things to do is cafe hop, especially when traveling. I'll bop around with my journal and explore the city's cafe culture. To add to the vibe, my Pause blend comes with. 
  4. Sleep routine - the most important part of the day stays the same no matter where I am. Skincare routine followed by hinoki oil 30 minutes before bed.
